CHAPTER NINE

Still a little shaken the girls went back into the house. Knowing that it was starting to get late, Belinda looked at her watch, but it didn’t seem to be working. She tapped the face of the watch a couple of times and looked again. “Hey, you guys, my watch stopped,” Belinda said. The other two girls looked at their watches.

“Looks like ours stopped as well,” Sarah said. That seemed like quite a strange coincidence they all agreed.

The girls wondered what that black shadow figure was, could it be a ghost that they didn’t want to believe in? It was transparent, not to mention the white glow that surrounded it. All they could do was guess. Besides, what else could go into a closet and disappear or walk into a wall and vanish? It didn’t seem to be harmful, maybe it was just as curious as they were. In any case, they decided to stick closer together.

“I am feeling a bit hungry,” Belinda said. Melody and Sarah agreed. The girls stopped and sat down on the steps and began to go through their bags. They ate their sandwiches that they brought along and relaxed for a while.

They talked about the black shadow and wondered what else they might find, and the sickness that Belinda felt every time something happened. The first time she felt sick was in the path leading to the house when the tree branch fell, and then in the cellar when the black shadow appeared. She seemed fine as soon as the shadow disappeared. They couldn’t figure out what was making Belinda sick for thoseshort intervals, and then fine again, as if nothing had happened at all. It was, however, becoming quite obvious that her sick spells had to do with the house.

Finally the girls moved off into the living room. They pulled some of the sheets from the furniture and sat down to talk for a while longer. The house felt cold and damp and the girls had a strange feeling that someone was watching them. A small cradle of wood sat near the opening of the fireplace and Sarah walked over and started a small fire. Then she walked back to the couch and sat down with Mel and Belinda. They decided to make some fun out of all the things that had happened and tell a few jokes and ghost stories. Nothing seemed to make the strange feelings they were having go away.

Suddenly, Melody woke up; she and the others had not realized that they had fallen asleep and it was now daybreak. “Wake up you guys!” Melody said, shaking Belinda and Sarah. They opened their eyes and squinted around the room.

“What happened?” Sarah said dazed. “We must have fallen asleep here last night, and I don’t recall anything.” Melody replied. None of the girls could recall what had happened last night and time seemed to pass so quickly.

Small puffs of smoke were all that was left of the fire they had started the night before.
